Issue Position

Martin understands and appreciates that our nation was built on immigration. His most distant identifiable ancestor, Robert Pryor, was born in England in 1635, and immigrated to America in the mid 1600s. Martin's ancestor, 4G grandfather, Hugh McClure, was born in Armagh County, Ireland and came to the United States in the late 1700s. Hugh married Susan Gibson of Ulster, Ireland and they ultimately settled in Montgomery County, Tennessee. Martin also has roots in Denmark and Scotland.

Martin certainly supports orderly, legal immigration. While our nation has always welcomed the brightest minds from around the world, and those in search of freedom, it would be a reckless national policy for our country to fail to properly secure its own borders. Immigration laws exist to to control the number and type of non-citizens who can be in our country. Irrespective of one's opinion of the law, until changed, it is important that we follow the law.

Neither the United States, nor Tennessee, has the resources to support the millions of people who want to come to our country. While immigration is primarily a federal matter, in Tennessee, Martin has sponsored and helped pass laws that discourage illegal immigration(prohibiting acceptance of consular ID cards) and require our state and city governments to comply with federal laws so as not to become a sanctuary for illegal aliens. Tennessee should strive to uphold a fair and legal immigration system, and we should ensure that those who unfairly jump to the front of the line and disregard the law are not given preferential treatment over those who obey the procedure in the law. That's why Martin Daniel is working to enforce the rule of law across Tennessee and eliminate incentives for illegal immigration.

Voted to ban sanctuary cities and require that local governments follow federal immigration laws

Voted to prohibit our state and local governments from accepting consular identification cards as proof of identity

Supports giving more tools to local law enforcement to verify arrested persons' citizenship status and enhancing cooperation with federal immigration authorities

Enforce legal worker laws and ensure employees' citizenship status is confirmed
